What is Luau?
What is Luau?
Luau is a long standing tradition here at Silver Strand Elementary. It is our biggest fundraiser event the PTO hosts. Although we were not able to celebrate Luau in its entirety until 2022, this event brings our school and community members together in an exciting way. In true Luau fashion, we have dinner, games and fun. In past years, we were able to have bounce houses and rock walls along with our silent auction. However, covid had a huge impact on what we can do moving forward. Starting in 2022, the PTO shifted to incorporating our Silver Strand families and teachers/staff to volunteer at the event. We asked our families, teachers/staff and community to coordinate carnival type games for our goers to enjoy, in addition to the live DJ, SSES student performances and other activities.
Our dinner is fee based, which goers will need to preregister for, but our auction is on an online platform called GiveSmart. People in the community at large and our school families are able to bid on items online as well as see items in person on the day of the Luau event. In 2022, we were able to raise about $10,000 which helped us give back to Silver Strand for new lunch tables and some PE and recess equipment. Monies raised in future years will continue to help to improve the environment at our school through events and programs we support, like family fun nights, holiday shoppe and enrichment clubs.
We raise money in three ways: food and merchandise sales, silent auction and raffles. We ask people who want to eat at the event to preregister for food through GiveSmart. People can also buy raffle tickets and view/bid on auction items. Auction items are gathered through donations from businesses in and around Coronado. Our raffles can be anything from a donated American Doll to a new bicycle donated by Holland’s Bikes. Other raffle items include small baskets for students to enjoy. These basket items are purchased with monetary donations collected by a designated classroom parent.
