The San Diego Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution visit Silver Strand SchoolPosted by: SSES Registrar 6 years ago
Silver Strand School was honored to have representatives from the San Diego Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution attend our Friday Flagpole Ceremony! They came to present the following awards to both our school and three of our fifth grade students.
Silver Strand’s fifth grade students recently participated in the Sons of the American Revolution’s Americanism Elementary School Poster Contest. The aim of this contest is to stimulate interest in American History in support of the established school curriculum. The topic for the 2013-14 Poster Contest was "Francis Marion: The Swamp Fox".
Congratulations to our students for receiving awards for their outstanding posters!
Aiden’s poster shown here, placed 1st in San Diego County and 2nd in the State of California competition (Aiden is pictured here with SAR members). Ciara & Jesse's posters were both recognized for Best in Class
Also awarded to Silver Strand School for showing leadership in teaching and promoting our Revolutionary history was the Mount Vernon Society’s George Washington portrait along with accompanying teaching materials. The portrait will be displayed in Mrs. Cavanaugh’s fifth grade classroom. Silver Strand qualified for this award through repeated wins in the SAR’s fifth grade poster contest, through promoting an annual “Colonial Days” celebrations, and for having weekly “flag-raising ceremonies”. Mrs. Cavanaugh attended the Valley Forge Teacher Recognition program last year as a winner of the California State Sons of the American Revolution award. She will also be attending this year’s program to further broaden her knowledge of Colonial America and early American history.
