CPD Captain Lawton Spends Special Afternoon at Silver Strand's "Operation Bigs"Posted by: SSES Registrar 5 years, 2 months ago
Operation Bigs is an after school mentoring program for military students that was started a number of years ago at Silver Strand in partnership with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of San Diego County. Adult volunteers ("Bigs") meet with students they've been paired with ("Littles") once a week on Wednesday afternoons and do things together like board games, playing sports outside, arts and crafts, and homework.
As a special treat this past Wednesday, Captain Mike Lawton of the Coronado Police Department and a "Big" volunteer, arranged for staff from the Police Department, Fire Department, City Lifeguards, and State Beach Lifeguards to bring their emergency vehicles for students to visit. An invitation was extended to all upper grade students whose dismissal coincided with the arrival of the vehicles, as well as kids in the Navy Rec and CUSD Child Care programs, to also take part. Everyone had a great time climbing on and in the vehicles, talking with personnel about their jobs, and interacting together.
